Gaming has already expanded beyond the concepts that both Mario and Zelda offer. I'm not saying they are inherently better or worse than any other franchise out there, just that people can interest in games, and not particularly care about either franchise. Who are you to say what constitutes a gamer?

From your tone I can tell you are kidding, but are you talking about the characters or their core franchises? 'Cause as chrs there is not a lot to love with the plump plumber and the mute elf.
Okay me and my sister went to a Burger joint today. It some art thing or something. You could get some good quality burger and while you wait you can look around to see some 'art'.
Well looking around I found some peculiar art. First there was a card explaining something about this so called exposition. On the front there was a colourful picture with many characters, like a badly drawn Mario, badly drawn Sonic (or is he supposed to look retarded?), Mickey Mouse, Ash Ketchum from Pokemon nailing Misty from behind! Yeah you read it right, hentai loli porn is considered art.
But okay enough of the stupid postcard, back to the restaurant. It looked like a building just finished from construction. White wall, concrete and almost no furniture. Also funny that they combine art with burgers, seeing as making burgers is probably where 90+% of aspiring artist will end up with.
So while you wait for your food, you can look around. Well so I entered a room to look at the art. All I saw was one empty room, with one painting and a bicycle. I am not even sure if the bicycle was part of an exposition or if it was just parked there by one of the employee's. I could not move in the other rooms because the entrance was blocked. And after seeing the first room, I reckon it were more empty rooms.
So I went back and ate my burger which was quite good.
More characters this gen should have been mute. And yes, franchises, as the mute elf is Link, sheesh
