I'm not sure if I agree with the Wii U coming out this year,  though I fear when Sony and Microsoft put out their new consoles, Nintendo's will already feel outdated.

No I don't think so. They did announce that the Wii U will be shown as CES though they've also said they won't show anything new for it. I suspect they're just going to wait for one big unveil at E3 and then will follow it up with a fall or winter launch.

And there's no real continuity in a meaningful way from game to game in terms of plot, so yeah, it's completely pointless.
