HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO ALL MY AMERICAN BROS!!

What have you all got to be Thankful for? Me:

  • My family made it through the "Superstorm" soggy, but safe.
  • I met some of the most incredible people I'll ever meet in my life in the last few weeks. "You look tired, Sugar. Do you want me to get you a cup of coffee or something to eat?" --Quote from a Mrs. Tull. She lost all of her worldly possessions and was concerned about ME in spite of it all. Made me cry.
  • Hey! I got a Wii U without having to camp outside someplace overnight! Today is the traditional Nintendo Download day. With the Wii U out, maybe they'll have something special in store for us?

Robio is so hooked on nintendoland. that is all he plays. Zombiu time for me

Well it's not that I'm hooked on it, it's just that it's the only game I have for the Wii U. I had to cancel my preorders and move money I'd put down for them to afford the system. Fortunately I should be able to afford something else by tomorrow thanks to a small holiday bonus.  Plus my son is playing Nintendo Land a lot so that's inflating my play-time of it.

But yes I do enjoy the game. I need to a pick up a motion plus controller though. I'm a little bored with the single player games. Time to try out the multiiplayer ones.

F***ing games journalists!

Eurogamer Epic Mickey 2 review said:

Now the series has gone multi-platform, and although we haven't been able to test the Wii version this time around, the PlayStation Move controls certainly suggest a degree of refinement as far as motion-sensor peripherals are concerned, with your paint-spraying ambitions battling the whims of the automatic camera far less regularly.

The best way to play the game, however, is probably with a standard 360 or PS3 controller, where paint and thinner are mapped to triggers, and the camera and paintbrush combo lurks down on the right thumbstick.

It's still a little slow to react at times, since you're moving the aiming reticule around for a bit before the viewpoint starts to actually shift, but it offers a lot more precision overall.

I'm thankful for my wife, son and future daughter.  I'm thankful for my health, especially after seeing other family members decline in health the last few months.  I also thankful that i could help one of these family members get into a nursing facility and get his Medicade.  Im also thankful that I can pay my bills, though it takes two jobs.  A lot of people today cannot do that, so I'm thankful that I still have the ability to do so.

THQ has clarified comments made by one of the developers of upcoming first-person shooter Metro: Last Light about the Wii U CPU:

This week 4A Games' chief technical officer Oles Shishkovtsov told NowGamer: “[The] Wii U has a horrible, slow CPU” by way of explaining why a Wii U version of Metro wasn't in the works.

Yesterday Eurogamer spoke with THQ's Huw Beynon, who works full time as a representative of 4A Games and Metro, to expand on Shishkovtsov's comment.

“I think there was one comment made by Oles the programmer - the guy who built the engine,” he said.

“It's a very CPU intensive game. I think it's been verified by plenty of other sources, including your own Digital Foundry guys, that the CPU on Wii U on the face of it isn't as fast as some of the other consoles out there. Lots of developers are finding ways to get around that because of other interesting parts of the platform."

“I think that what frustrates me about the way the story's been spun out is that there's been no opportunity to say, 'Well, yes, on that one individual piece maybe it's not as... maybe his opinion is that it's not as easy for the way that the 4A engine's been built as is the others.

“What it doesn't go on to look at is to say that, you know, we could probably get around that. We could probably get Metro to run on an iPad if we wanted, or on pretty much anything. Just as in the same way that between PC and current console versions there are some compromises that need to be made in certain places and we strive to get the very best performance that we can from any platform we release on.

“But I understand that there's a real appetite in the media at the moment because the Wii U is a hot topic to spam some stories that are going to attract a lot of links if they present it in a certain way.”

So, will Metro: Last Light ever appear on Nintendo's first high definition home console?

“We looked at Wii U as a target platform,” Beynon said. "It's a really small studio. There were 50 for Metro 2033, there are 80 now. With Metro 2033 most of their experience was with the PC. The Xbox 360 was their first console version. We've now added PlayStation 3 to the mix.

“We genuinely looked at what it would take to bring the game to Wii U. It's certainly possible, and it's something we thought we'd like to do. The reality is that would mean a dedicated team, dedicated time and effort, and it would either result in a detriment to what we're trying to focus on, already adding a PlayStation 3 SKU, or we probably wouldn't be able to do the Wii U version the justice that we'd want.

“It would be a port or we wouldn't be able to get to grips with the system. That's really the essence of it. It's something we can potentially look at and return to later. Given the targets we've set for the game, it didn't make sense to proceed with it at this point.”

Basically confirms everything I was saying. 4A's engine is very CPU intensive code and would have to be significantly changed to assign tasks to other areas of Wii U like the General Purpose GPU, I/O and DSP as well as changing the in-order nature of the code to match Wii U's OoO CPU instruction set. As he says, "Lots of developers are finding ways to get around the CPU because of other interesting parts of the platform." He's referring to those features I mentioned along with others. As Sumo Digital said, developers with games that rely on high floating point number crunching calculations might run into problems on U. The question we need to answered is what exactly does the GPGPU of do, over and above what the regular normal GPUs do in other systems? I assume it has easier to implement effects and according to what we know about the PC version the card evolved from it should be able to handle AI too.

Also:

"CVG's coverage of the story had clarified that studios, such as Ubisoft Montpellier (Assassin's Creed 3) and Treyarch (Black Ops 2), appear to have successfully ported their high definition games to Nintendo's new system. The report added that THQ wants 4A to finish work on Metro Last Light before April due to assurances made to investors. This could be one of a number of reasons for why the studio is not focusing its resources on a Wii U port."

FAR CRY 3 REVIEWS

In CVGs Far Cry 3 review we said the shooter is "one of this year's best games" and "an experience you have to sink your (bloody) teeth into."

Other reviewers seemed to be equally jazzed about Ubisoft's sequel, and we've gathered up reviews scores and listed them all below.

Take a look:

Far Cry 3 Screenshot
  • OXM UK: 9/10 - Far Cry 3 isn't too much of a departure, once you actually get to grips with the landscape that stretches behind that fidgety, histrionic exterior. It is, however, handily the best game in the series so far, and deserves to hold its head high among this winter's noisy crowd of sandbox offerings. If madness is repetition, this is one reworking of a formula I don't mind losing my mind to.
  • Eurogamer: 10/10 - In the past, Far Cry's vision of a first-person shooter RPG where you explore, master and then control your environment has always been more seductive on paper than any of its developers have managed to deliver on disc. Far Cry 3 changes all that. For me, this is the new apex predator of open-world shooters. Hunt it down as soon as you can.
  • IGN: 9.0 - Far Cry 3's dark story and exciting combat are equally unpredictable. Savor its incredible open world.
  • VideoGamer: 9/10 - Far Cry 3 shines in its campaign, which is more layered and compelling than any game proffering a power trip through escapist ultraviolence has any right to be. You could dismiss it all as offensive macho garbage, sure, but you could also read it as a unblinking look at the primal appeal of becoming capable at dishing out violence and how the confidence this confers can both attract and repel others. It's the sort of impact that could only be made by a video game, as in this medium neither responsibility for one's actions nor risk to one's well-being are realistic concerns. It's like disconnecting one's mind from reality; nothing is real, everything is permitted and madness is the ultimate get-out-of-jail-free card.
  • StrategyInformer: 9.0 - Far Cry 3 is a triumph that stands out from every other shooter released this year. It'll frustrate sometimes, but hey, you can punch a shark in the face. In the face!
  • 1UP: B- - Despite its heady aspirations, Ubisoft's open-world FPS remains popcorn entertainment.
  • God is a Geek: 9/10 - Far Cry 3 is a resounding success, the sheer amount of things that you can spend your time doing make it a purchase that screams value for money. Add on top of that the story, the voice acting, the multiplayer aspects and all the gameplay elements which make Far Cry 3 a joy to play from start to finish, you're left with a game that will be in most people's Game of the Year nominations.
  • Official PlayStation Magazine: 9 - Far Cry 3's real triumph is blending so many elements into a cohesive whole without any feeling extraneous or tacked-on. Every element works and has its place, and contributes to a narrative that may not be class-leading but certainly exceeds expectations. It also possesses the perfect balance between steadily empowering you, yet never allowing you to feel overwhelmed by the sheer magnitude of what's on offer - something even a game as great as Arkham City couldn't manage.
  • GamesRadar: 4.5/5 - Far Cry 3 doesn't need a strong multiplayer component because its single-player campaign will keep you invested for dozens of hours. You'll be eager to explore every bit of the tropical setting, to drive along the beach or hang glide over the ocean. You'll want to find lost treasures in the sunken ships that line the island's periphery and stab sharks to death for their valuable skins. You'll be compelled to save Jason's friends--even if they're super annoying--because attempting to do so means experiencing some of the most interesting missions you've likely seen in a shooter. And when tigers, bears, or other distractions randomly interrupt those missions, you'll have some pretty awesome stories to tell. That's just how Far Cry 3 rolls.
  • IB Tech: 7/10 - Far Cry 3 is not quite the marriage of art and entertainment that it wants to be, but it's nevertheless packed with ideas that are unique to games, while still being lots of fun to play.
  • IncGamers: 9/10 - Brutal, dark, well-written, and deeply enjoyable. Far Cry 3 takes a lot of its predecessors ideas and makes them work.
  • RockPaperShotgun: No score - This new game doesn't quite manage to clinch 2012 for me, but I have awkward tastes. For most people, I suspect, this will be cocktails and barbecues on the beach. Right as the year closes, we have another reason to be cheerful.
  • Kotaku: No score - Far Cry 3 is an example of the rare ambitious, big-budget game that accomplishes exactly what it sets out to do-chaotic yet controlled, with a brilliantly-balanced mechanical ecosystem that challenges and empowers at every turn. It's a wild ride, and one well worth taking. Just watch out for crocodiles.
  • Canadian Online Gamers: 90 - Far Cry 3 has effectively managed to bring a level of unparalleled insanity to a franchise that listens to its fans and manages to effectively redefine itself with each outing. Far Cry 3′s deep open world experience filled with its cast of unforgettably insane characters, entertaining storyline, vibrant visuals and varied gameplay makes it one of the best open world games to touch down in 2012. While the multiplayer aspects of the game are not quite as memorable and have fallen a bit behind other triple A shooters already on the market, as an entire package Far Cry is an impressive feat and one that should be under a lot of trees this holiday season.
  • Digital Spy: 4/5 - Despite a surprising amount of repetition within the single-player campaign, Far Cry 3 is a wonderful shooter with lots of secrets to discover and a huge game world to explore. Taking place in a stunning environment and featuring a compelling narrative, as well as an excellent cast of characters, Far Cry 3 offers hours of enjoyment, something which is greatly extended thanks to its competitive and co-operative multiplayer modes.

LOL

Just.......... wow. lol

This system is ridiculous. I've seen system launches before but it's like information overload there are so many quirks and weirdness and even little features discovered, technical hiccups etc. Gamepad can do 3D with glasses, background downloads affect performance. System does upscale Wii games etc.

I really feel for Peter Molyneux. The man clearly feels passionate for what does. I hope he can finally create something that fully encapsulates his vision one day. Cliff Bleszinski tweeted a funny comment a couple of days ago about how 22 Cans could also be called 11 Strippers. LOL

Yeah but this is the real Thanksgiving. That was just Canadian Thanksgiving. Like you guys have anything to be thankful about. You don't even have hockey this year.

FarCry 3 is getting excellent reviews. I'll have to put this on my "To buy shortly" list.

I really think the best thing Molyneux could do for himself is shut the fuck up for 2 years, make a game, and then the day it's ready announce it to the world. I think a lot of his games would be better accepted if there were no expectations or promises. I think he'd find the process more relaxing too and maybe he'd stop crying.

I like that he cried, showed he's passionate. I think he's taken things to heart too much though. I don't see vindictive vehement criticism towards him, just saying that he's too enthusiastic.

Maybe there are some turds on the internet that have flogged him.
