The 25 worst Wii covers ever

Great find GG. I love stuff like this.

Indeed!  These are so bad, I begin to wonder if could've had a career in game cover design.

Those covers may be awful but every one of those games is a masterpiece.  You are all just a bunch of superficial hipsters always judging a game by its cover.  Give them a chance!!

Happy Thanksgiving y'all!!

Digital foundrys' ME3 face off is interesting:

DF said:

There's an enviable 1GB of RAM available for games applications on Wii U (up from the 512MB found in the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3), but it's significantly slower than the throughput of the GDDR3 found in the Microsoft console.

To mitigate the issue, the Wii U has 32MB of ultra-fast onboard eDRAM integrated into the AMD graphics core and the new hardware almost certainly renders out directly from that.
We're not yet clear on how texture fetching works on the new console but conceivably the challenge becomes a matter of importing assets from the main RAM into the GPU eDRAM in an orderly fashion and keeping them contained in that space before exporting the whole framebuffer to the video output. Shadowmaps take up a lot of space which may explain why they have apparently been downscaled on Arkham City.

Mass Effect 3 on Wii U - performance comparisons:

So, with the image quality concerns resolved we move onto the thorny issue of performance. Some reviews have expressed some reservations about the Wii U version of the game, suggesting that it suffers from off-putting frame-rate drops. We'd suggest that this needs to be put into context: anyone who has played the existing console versions of any of the Mass Effect titles will know that this is an issue regardless of hardware, though Xbox 360 has historically commanded an advantage over PlayStation 3 - especially so with Mass Effect 3.

Regardless, the video tells a fairly straightforward story - performance remains an obvious concern on the PlayStation 3, while the Wii U and Xbox 360 ran at virtual parity for much of the run of the play. Screen-filling effects work causes noticeable frame-rate dips on the Microsoft platform, but Wii U appears to be relatively consistent - even on the more open, challenging battlescapes of Palaven. However, the final clip demonstrates that you can't rely on a sustained performance throughout the game. Here, for reasons which elude us, Wii U suffers badly in a relatively simple exchange of fire. It's indicative of a number of areas throughout the game where the new platform matches or even drops below the performance level of the PlayStation 3 release.

A genuinely useful addition is enhanced squad control - CPU AI has never been state-of-the-art and the ability to tap on a team member and plot their course through the map is a useful innovation.

Regardless of the fact that the game has been farmed out to another developer, and irrespective of the state of the current Wii U toolchain and the overall lack of experience the studio would have had with the console, the fact is that a true generational leap in power - even the 2x to 4x jump represented by the Digital Foundry PC - would be reflected in a much higher level of performance than we see here. That said, we must remember that this is a first gen Wii U title, a conversion of a game that was never designed with the platform in mind. Assuming publishers put the resources in, there's no reason to believe that we shouldn't see superior results into these multi-platform titles in the future.

This system is ridiculous. I've seen system launches before but it's like information overload there are so many quirks and weirdness and even little features discovered, technical hiccups etc. Gamepad can do 3D with glasses, background downloads affect performance. System does upscale Wii games etc.

WHAT 3D??? How can I try this?

Here

Two weeks ago, we, the IMGMR team, were told of a very interesting bit of information regarding the Wii U Gamepad. At Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed III Launch Party here in Montreal, a Product Manager shared with us that the Gamepad is actually 3D enabled and will be usable in games like Assassin's Creed III. Now, we come with the confirmation.

In Assassin's Creed III, the 3D factor can be activated at any time during gameplay by going into the options and changing the 3D settings at "Sterescopy" and, right under, "3D Strength". The stereoscopy can be changed from Off, to Inficolor, to Side By Side or Top Bottom. Also, the 3D strength can be measured from 0 to 10, depending on your visual comfort. The green and magenta 3D glasses needed to experience this visual sensation come from Inficolor.

On a quick note, it was already established that many Wii U games will allow gamer to play the whole experience on the Wii U Gamepad's screen. One such example is obviously Assassin's Creed III. From the settings as well, players can bring the action in between their hands and then bring it back to the big screen if ever they feel they prefer the big screen experience.

Not only does it have 3D it has 3D audio, wait 10 minutes and I will post the info. The 3D on the gamepad screen is not glasses free stereoscopic. It's the same 3D that any 2D screen can do wearing the right coloured glasses, it uses a specialist headset. But what is cool is that you can use them on the gamepad screen, so imagine in bed with the glasses or whatever. You need to buy these Inficolor glasses.

Happy Turkey Day you guys and hidden girls. This site has been a nice place to come chat about games and other stuff. With a nice group of civil people (for the most par). Thanks everyone for all you do here and else were. It's nice to have a few decent people around!

Yes!  I may never meet any of you guys in person, but you're a great group of guys (and girl lurkers).

Don't call Iga a girl. angry

Another note on the U pad screen quality, apparently the quality of the picture depends on how the image is sent. Some games downscale from 720p whilst some render it at the native 480p. Also even though the screen is 480p the pixels per inch density is pretty good and I've seen quite a few journos saying that the picture on the gamepad screen can be better than their TV. This also might have something to do with Wii U using limited band range HDMI output which some tvs are not good with.

Like I said, SO many quirks and details with this system, it's nuts.

Nano Assault is pretty cool, it is no Stardust though. I am first place on the first level of the arcade mode.

Wait so Scribblenauts has Star Wars and Ghostbusters? Wow.

I am pretty sure the characters were made with the Editor that is included in the Wii U and PC version of the game.

I'm not sure it's the same as the cereal box ones. Those never worked, I swear!

Anyone tried this out?

Saw some reviews for Arkham Asylum 3D which uses these.

We were pleasantly surprised by how well it actually works. Seriously, it's pretty decent.

Flick on the 3D mode and, looking without the glasses you see the colours on screen go all askew, with slight tints of red and green in areas where the 3D effect is being applied.

Actually, the opening cutscene is underwhelming. It's not until you get into gameplay that the 3D effect really starts to stand out. Batman himself is the main spectacle - he looks distinctively 'closer' to you than everything in the background.

Nothing jumps out of the screen towards your face - not like with full-fat stereoscopic 3D - but during gameplay there's obvious depth. Characters and protruding objects like tables, crates or railings, clearly stand away from the environment in the background. Snooping around on the gargoyles high above your enemies is particularly cool, with Batman clearly right up close and the scenery below dipping further away. It makes swooping down on enemies that little bit more satisfying.

We didn't expect it to work this well. Onlookers from around the office were drawn in - mainly to point and laugh at us looking like idiots with those ridiculously cheap-looking cardboard specs on but, after reluctantly trying them on for themselves, were quick to admit at it's actually pretty cool.

But those old-fashioned two-tone specs come with the same old drawbacks. Our eyes were uncomfortable with it at first, clearly not loving the potent red and green shades covering each eye. But you get used to it and it becomes more comfortable.

The main issue is the loss your ability to see in full colour. That's a pretty major loss particularly for such a nice-looking game, and whatever colour-correction techniques that may be employed just don't work. The game's far more colourful in 2D mode.

So you have a choice; you either play it in 2D as normal, or trade in your perception of a few million colours, along with your pride of appearance, for a bit of three-dimensional trickery that's mild in comparison to proper stereoscopic 3D.

It's is a cool novelty and a unique experience on consoles (until PS3 gets its proper 3D update later this summer, that is), but it's more a neat bonus than a reason to rush out to grab the GotY Edition if you already own a standard version of the game.

So it works I guess, not as good as proper stereoscopic but you can get the glasses for less than $20 and cheaper used. It's nothing game changing but it is cool that the game pad screen can do this for off tv play.

It's amazing that for as many things that change in this world there are still some people that just do not and will not. Grammton, for example, he's never left the GS Forums and still jumps at ANY opportunity to crap on anything having to do with Nintendo. I tried to do something NICE for people looking for a Wii U and he's turned it into his personal platform for saying how BAD the launch was. I'm annoyed my Topic has been turned into that, but feel more pity for Gram because of his inability to change, grow or simply let things go. Sad.

Okay this is cool too.

So you know that Wii U does 6 channel PCM sound right? Well it also has stereo from the gamepad speakers and Nintendo are using it with cool effect. Grab some headphones for this, the second video is particularly cool

Forget Two Screens. Listen to the Wii U’s Dual Audio Trick.

We've got something for you to listen to. So grab some headphones.

Ready?

OK. Listen to the first clip. Watch it as you listen.

Then let me explain:

One of the weirdest innovations of the Nintendo Wii was the inclusion of a speaker in the system's controller. It could crudely play sound effects or even speech samples, emitting the sounds of a released bow during archery in a Zelda or the sounds of a suggestive phone call in No More Heroes.

Nintendo's creators said that the controller speaker would complement traditional TV speakers to give games on the Wii a three-dimensional soundscape. You might hear a sound effect from the controller and get the sensation that it travelled, like that arrow in Zelda to the TV. Good idea, poor execution. The Wii controller speaker was terrible. It didn't work very well.

On the Wii U, Nintendo gets a second chance to create 3D soundscapes and, right at launch, the results are much more successful. The Wii U GamePad emits quality stereo sound and can even create its own pseudo-surround sound effect. This can complement the audio that the console is sending to the user's TV or surround sound system.

In the clip up top, you'll hear the soundscape of Nintendo Land's central plaza. You'll hear the sound that's emitted from the system and from the GamePad. What you have to imagine is that you actually hear both at the same time when you're playing. You hear the GamePad audio right near your ears. You hear the system audio from wherever your TV or sound system speakers are. It seems that, in that game's plaza, Nintendo's designers want you to feel as if the game's music is loudest when you're on the ground and is fading when you go to the top of the tower's plaza. Yet you always hear it close to you. Interesting, but a bit odd.

Here's an even more interesting example of this kind of 3D audio in, of all things, the Wii U's Mii Maker. Listen to this one with headphones, because we play with the stereo effects. We'll let you hear the system audio, the GamePad audio and then both at once, one in each ear. Notice how the same melody plays, but with different instruments being played from different audio sensors. You'll hear a violin, for example, that only plays from the GamePad. It really does make it sound like you're in the middle of an orchestra.

We don't have an example of ZombiU for you to listen to, but it does smart things with the dual-audio possibilities as well. As you play that first-person shooter you might hear the voice of the Prepper—essentially the guy giving you orders from a remote location—through your GamePad, while the sounds of the zombies you're fighting come from your TV. When you hold up the GamePad and use it to scan the room your character is in, the bleeps and bloops of its sensors emanate from the GamePad's speakers.

You knew he would do that when you made the thread. Nyaa Soon Carnage and Pedro will come too.
